PTK - Phototherapeutic KeratectomyPTK or phototherapeutic keratectomy is a type of laser eye surgery used to treat various corneal disorders, such as recurrent corneal erosions, corneal dystrophies, and corneal scars. The procedure uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea by removing a thin layer of damaged tissue. PTK can improve vision, reduce pain and discomfort, and prevent further damage to the cornea.
During the PTK procedure, the patient is given local anesthesia, and an instrument called a speculum is used to hold the eye open. The surgeon then uses the excimer laser to remove the damaged tissue from the cornea. The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour, and the patient can go home on the same day. After the procedure, the patient may experience some discomfort and sensitivity to light, but these usually subside within a few days.
PTK is generally considered safe and effective, with a high success rate in treating corneal disorders. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications, such as infection, bleeding, and over-correction. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of PTK with your eye doctor to determine if it is the right treatment option for your condition.
