The Initial Stage of Bleeding: Gingivitis (Gum Inflammation)
The most common and usually the most easily treatable cause of gum bleeding is mild gum inflammation called gingivitis. This is the first and reversible stage of gum disease.
- How Does It Occur?
Bacterial plaque that constantly builds up on your teeth and gums in areas missed during daily cleaning eventually hardens into tartar. This tartar and plaque irritate the gum tissue, leading to inflammation. - Symptoms: Slight swelling in the gums, bright redness, and most importantly, easy bleeding when brushing or flossing.

Bleeding isn't always caused solely by plaque buildup. Sometimes, other underlying conditions can lead to this issue:
- Systemic Diseases: Diabetes (sugar disease) can exacerbate gum diseases. Conditions like leukemia and certain immune system disorders can also increase the tendency to bleed.
- Medication Use: Blood-thinning medications, such as Aspirin, can cause your gums to bleed more easily. If this is the case, you should inform your dentist without stopping the medication.
