Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgery, is a medical procedure performed to treat various sinus conditions that cause chronic sinusitis or other related issues. The surgery aims to improve the drainage of the sinuses, reduce inflammation, and alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and difficulty breathing. Sinus surgery may be recommended when conservative treatments, such as medications and nasal irrigation, have not provided sufficient relief.
Types of Sinus Surgery:
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: This is the most common type of sinus surgery and is minimally invasive. It is performed using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached to it. The endoscope is inserted through the nostrils, allowing the surgeon to visualize the sinuses and perform the procedure without any external incisions.
During endoscopic sinus surgery, the surgeon may remove nasal polyps, remove or open blocked sinus passages, and clear out inflamed or infected tissue. The procedure aims to restore normal sinus drainage and improve breathing.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): FESS is a type of endoscopic sinus surgery that focuses on improving the function of the sinuses by removing obstructions, such as polyps or damaged tissue, and widening the sinus openings.
Image-Guided Sinus Surgery: In some cases, image-guided technology may be used during sinus surgery. This technology provides real-time navigation based on preoperative imaging, helping the surgeon precisely target affected areas and avoid critical structures.
Balloon Sinuplasty: Balloon sinuplasty is a less invasive procedure that involves inserting a small balloon catheter into the sinus openings and inflating it to widen the passages. This helps improve sinus drainage and relieve symptoms without removing tissue.
Conditions Treated with Sinus Surgery:
Sinus surgery is typically recommended for chronic sinusitis that does not respond to conservative treatments. Chronic sinusitis is a condition in which the sinuses become inflamed and blocked for an extended period, leading to recurrent infections and persistent symptoms.
Other conditions that may benefit from sinus surgery include:
Nasal polyps: Noncancerous growths that can obstruct the sinuses and nasal passages.
Deviated nasal septum: A shift in the nasal septum (the thin wall between the nostrils) that can block sinus drainage.
Chronic sinus infections: Frequent or persistent sinus infections that do not improve with medications.
Mucoceles: Mucus-filled cysts that can develop in the sinuses, causing pressure and pain.
Benefits of Sinus Surgery:
Improved sinus drainage: Sinus surgery can open up blocked sinuses, allowing for better drainage and reducing the risk of infections.
Alleviation of symptoms: Sinus surgery can relieve nasal congestion, facial pain, headaches, and other symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis.
Enhanced quality of life: By addressing chronic sinus issues, sinus surgery can improve overall quality of life, allowing individuals to breathe more easily and comfortably.
Reduced dependence on medications: Successful sinus surgery may reduce the need for long-term use of medications to manage sinus symptoms.
While sinus surgery can be highly effective in treating chronic sinus conditions, it is essential to consult with an experienced ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon to determine if surgery is the right option for your specific case. The surgeon will assess your medical history, symptoms, and imaging studies to create a personalized treatment plan that may include surgery or other appropriate interventions to address your sinus issues effectively.
