Prof. Dr. Birkan Özkan was born in 1980 in Tarsus, Mersin. He completed his basic dentistry education at Selcuk University Faculty of Dentistry in 2003. During his university years, he represented Turkey as the Official Delegate of the European Dental Students Association (EDSA). His academic journey was marked by receiving a prestigious scholarship from the USA’s Texas – Houston University, one of America's leading universities.
Dr. Özkan embarked on his Specialization Education in Dentistry at Selcuk University, focusing on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. As part of his Master's Degree, he received a state scholarship to study in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Oulu, Finland. His specialization included extensive practical experience, performing numerous maxillofacial surgeries at Shahid Bhaesti University, Azad University, and Shiraz University Hospitals in Iran.
In 2009, Dr. Özkan began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University. His dedication and expertise earned him the title of Associate Professor in 2014 and the esteemed title of Professor in 2020. At Yüzüncü Yıl University, he made significant contributions by establishing the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and serving as its Head for an extended period.
Dr. Özkan has been a prominent figure in numerous national and international seminars and conferences, often participating as a speaker and session chair. He authored a comprehensive book titled Maxillofacial Surgery in Turkey, based on an extensive 11,000-page English translation and his professional experiences. His innovative surgical techniques have gained international recognition, contributing to the global medical literature.
With 37 scientific articles published in renowned journals and 18 presentations at scientific congresses, Dr. Özkan's contributions to dentistry are well-documented. He also served as the editor-in-chief of an international scientific journal for four years. Fluent in English, German, and Finnish, Prof. Dr. Birkan Özkan continues to be a leading figure in dental and maxillofacial surgery.
